Women Make Waves Taiwan: Myriad Forms of Love and Resistance
After presenting a selection of queer short films at the Women Make Waves International Film Festival (WMWIFF) in Taiwan in October 2025, XPOSED is excited to now welcome Huei-Yin Chen from WMWIFF with a guest program in Berlin. The exchange between WMWIFF and XPOSED has been kindly supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government, and Goethe-Institut Taipei.
With myriad forms — from fiction and documentary to experimental film, artist film, and music video — these shorts explore ever-evolving manifestations of “performing” and “becoming”. Created by queer artists based in East Asia or of Asian descent, the films engage with and trace the presence of queer bodies and the creation of queer space. Military Dog transforms military experience into the pleasures of submission, while Looking for Jiro unveils hidden dimensions of queer sexuality in history through drag king performance. Music becomes a tour de force in WHAT U WANNA DO, where the moving body builds a sanctuary in the woods. While both Pswagi Temahahoi and as a bird that briefly perches explore the relationship between humans and land, the former reinterprets oral folklore to imagine a mythical place for women and gender-diverse bodies, whereas the latter reflects on rooting — and the process of becoming — within diasporic experience. Last but not least, My First Funeral stages a cinematic funeral that becomes both an act of defiance and of love.

What U Wanna Do
A euphoric and liberating music video of pure ferality, WHAT U WANNA DO is a reclamation, a re-wilding, a return of the gaze, characterized through the film’s three protagonists: 丑 (clown), 女 (woman), and 馬 (horse). Director and movement artist Jas Lin, together with performers Jinjabrew and Jason Vu, transmute the energy of “What U Wanna Do” by OHYUNG & Matt Evans into a sacred joke, taunting normies and racists, capitalists and homophobes.

Pswagi Temahahoi (2024)
The film follows the artist Ciwas Tahos’s journey to rediscover Temahahoi, a queer space from an Atayal oral story. In this story, Temahahoi is a hidden place deep in the mountains inhabited only by women and gender diverse people. They have powers: they can communicate with wild bees, sustain themselves on steam and can get impregnated by the wind.

As a Bird That Briefly Perches (擇鳥記)
Departing from the filmmaker’s personal experience as a diasporic artist, this three-part video work is a cinematic diary that weaves together her sentiments about homeland with reference to the geology of Hong Kong; an analogy between closeting and greenhouse gardening; and her reflections on the choice of living abroad as she studies the everyday life of migrant farmers and their adaptation on foreign soil, reinterpreting agricultural processes and the migration of species. The film explores the implications of rooting, re-rooting and growing as the artist contemplates on the evolving dynamics between land and human.
