Shorts 2 – Until We Meet Again

This short film program deals with grief and longing – the intense yet essential process of all queer persons in dealing with loss. It opens with Nyame Mma, which creates a space for queer/male mourning, re-kindling the tie between a queer Ghanian migrant in the West and their biological kin.

Later on we are invited to pray, accompanied by everything in our house did not seem to fit. Part cinematic ritual, part exorcism, an homage to her ancestor in Nigeria. Heart Murmurs brings us into an intimate dialogue space with Dean, a queer person in Hong Kong, who shares his story of congenital disability and HIV during the first years of the COVID pandemic, as “things leave you with scars, in the name of love”.

This dialogue continues onto Congratulations, Dx!, which portrays how Dextor finally returns to his hometown after long disappearance to confront the social scars of his past and social stigma. The program concludes with I don’t want to be just a memory, the collective homage to queer persons in the Berlin nightlife scene who lost their lives to substance-related mental health situations.

everything in our house did not seem to fit

Part exorcism, part film, everything in our house did not seem to fit is an exploration of remembrance. This cinematic exorcism ritual is a poetic and experimental eulogy to the past, as it sheds light on the forgotten corners of childhood once lived.

I don't want to be just a memory

I don’t want to be just a memory

Fellow Berlin queer community members together mourn the loss of their dead friends due to substance abuse and mental health crisis (and the loss of urban safe spaces in general) by sharing a few personal materials, stories and honest criticism about the club/nightlife scene. Resembling glowing-in-the-dark fungi such as Panellus stipticus, they transform dead bodies and memories into a collective structure that sustains future living – radiating the light together as a network of support and care.
