Opening Feature – How To Live

Moviemento 29.05.2025 – 21:00
This year we open our festival with a documentary film about coming together, a film about organizing and a film about inhabiting spaces as queer people and filling them with joy, expression and the self. For his feature debut, Nairobi-based filmmaker Njoroge Muthoni takes up the camera and follows people at work, creating, getting ready for events, organizing, pondering, discussing, sharing. The film becomes a lively, direct and intimate portrait of queer spaces in the Kenyan capital, opening room for the perspectives of its inhabitants, amongst others pioneers like Jim Chuchu. It extends its reality with stylized vignettes that take us to other worlds. In everything, the film looks for what drives these spaces, the needs that they address, the defiance they pose, their relationship to white queerness and the pure joy that they hold for the LGBTQIA+ youth of the city in particular.
